Washington State’s King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division has contracted Moose Boats to build a 46’ diesel-electric hybrid patrol boat. The vessel will be based on the Moose Boats M1 model and is designed for law enforcement operations in Puget Sound.

The propulsion system will combine twin Volvo Penta D11 625-hp diesel engines with in-line Danfoss electric motors. Corvis Battery will supply the battery systems, which are expected to power the vessel in electric-only mode for up to two hours at a speed of five knots. The diesel engines will recharge the batteries and provide additional propulsion as needed.

The project is being funded through a grant supported by Washington State’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA), which allocates revenue to programs that reduce emissions. The vessel is being purchased using General Services Administration (GSA) pricing.

HamiltonJet will supply the electric propulsion system, including the AVX Express control package, which features joystick-based maneuvering and jet anchoring. The system includes a handheld remote for operating the vessel from multiple positions inside the cabin.

Navigation and electronics will include Raymarine radar, chartplotter, AIS, depth sounder, and a rear-facing camera. The vessel will also carry a dedicated tow sonar, ICOM VHF radios, and department-issued communication equipment.

Construction will take place at Moose Boats’ facility in Vallejo, Calif.
