A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew from Air Station North Bend medevaced an ill crewmember from the National Geographic Venture approximately 15 nautical miles off the coast of Coos Bay, Ore., on April 20.
The helicopter crew launched after receiving reports of a medical emergency aboard the coastal expedition vessel. The individual was safely hoisted from the ship and transported to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay for further evaluation, Coast Guard officials said. The agency did not release additional information regarding the crewmember’s condition.
Operated by Lindblad Expeditions, the National Geographic Venture is a 238'x44'x10' U.S.-flagged cruise ship purpose-built for navigating remote coastal waters, including regions of Alaska, Baja, Calif., Costa Rica, and the Pacific Northwest. The vessel was delivered in 2018 by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, Freeland, Wash.
Designed with input from decades of expedition operations, the ship accommodates 100 passengers in 50 cabins and is equipped with tools for close-up exploration in shallow coves and fast-moving channels.
